Do you have Acid Reflux? Visit a Chiropractor Today

If you are experiencing Acid Reflux, or GERD, your local chiropractor can be a great source of help. Your chiropractor will first diagnose the condition and then put together an appropriate plan in which to treat the pain. Chiropractic can be an effective method of treating Acid Reflux.

Acid reflux is very common in today’s society affecting almost 1 in every 9 chiropractic patients. Acid reflux, or otherwise known as heartburn or GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease), is caused by stomach acid irritating the esophagus.

The main cause of acid reflux is when the esophageal sphincter (LES) does not work properly during tightening to seal off the stomach. Two factors that relate to this problem are overeating, and eating foods with high levels of fat, oil, and foods such as citrus, onions, coffee, and tomatoes.  Stress and smoking can also lead to the stimulation of stomach acid.

Signs and symptoms include, but are not limited to burning in the throat, chest pain accompanied by bending over and/or eating, difficulty swallowing, increased discomfort while lying down, and feeling like food is stuck in the chest.

A doctor can diagnose a person with acid reflux by signs and symptoms.  Occasionally other procedures are necessary;  for example, a doctor may need to look at the esophagus by using an endoscope (flexible tube), an x-ray, or CAT / MRI.

Your chiropractor will perform a thorough history and examination including orthopaedic and neurological testing.  Then your chiropractor will develop a specific plan of management tailored to your case.
