Sciatica Information and Treatment Options

This article discusses the Sciatic Nerve and its place within the body. It also discusses the condition known as Sciatica and where the pain is derived from. In addition, treatment options for Sciatica will be discussed.

Before we discuss Sciatica, we need to answer what is the sciatic nerve?  The sciatic nerve originates from the spinal nerves L4-S3 and is the major nerve that arises from the lumbo-sacral area.   Within the thigh the sciatic nerve has no sensory branches.  The sensory branches of the sciatic nerve emerge in an area called the popliteal fossa (behind the knee).   The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the human body.

Sciatica is a pain that shoots along the sciatic nerve, radiating along the buttock area and down the back of the leg and as far as the foot.  The pain of sciatica can take on many forms: shooting and burning, sharp or dull,  nonstop or intermittent.  Sciatica is caused by compression and/or irritation of one of five nerve roots that give rise to the sciatic nerve or by compression and/or irritation of the sciatic nerve itself.

There are many causes of sciatica. More common causes of Sciatica include:

  1. Disc herniation
  2. Spinal Stenosis
  3. Piriformis syndrome
  4. Pregnancy
  5. Postural –i.e. sitting on a wallet

Your Chiropractor will perform a thorough history and examination including orthopaedic, neurological testing and diagnostic radiography to determine the true cause of your sciatica.  Then they will develop a specific plan of management tailored to your case.
