What is Anxiety and How Can It Be Treated?

Anxiety is a condition many of us feel in our daily lives. Although it is common, it's important to know if the anxiety is part of a larger problem or just an isolated incident. It it is part of a larger problem, it should be treated so that it doesn't lead to other severe issues. This article discusses anxiety and some treatment options.

Anxiety is a feeling of apprehension or fear.  Many of us face anxiety in our daily leaves and wish it would go away.

Anxiety is a natural reaction that serves as a basic survival mechanism.  Anxiety is like an alarm system that gets activated whenever a person perceives danger.  It is normal to have anxiety when things get hectic or complicated but, if the anxiety becomes overwhelming you may feel out of control.   Persistent and unrelenting anxiety often leads to unhealthy behaviours like overeating and abuse of alcohol or drugs.

If your anxiety is interrupting with sleep or if you spend excessive amounts of time feeling worried or nervous, this may be a symptom of an anxiety problem or anxiety disorder.  In addition, anxiety disorder can cause sleep disorders, high blood pressure (hypertension) and depression.

Anxiety disorder is very common. About 3% of adults will have an anxiety disorder during any 12 month period.  Women are twice as likely as men to have an anxiety disorder.  Anxiety disorder consists of excessive nervousness and worry lasting 6 months or longer about many activities or events.

Your chiropractor will perform a thorough history and examination including orthopaedic and neurological testing.  Then your chiropractor will develop a specific plan of management tailored to your case.
