What is Fibromyalgia and How Can Your Chiropractor Help?

This article discusses the cause and effect of Fibromyalgia, or Primary Fibrositis. Fibromyalgia is primarilly found in females between the ages of 20 and 60. It can be a very painful condition, and not one that should be taken lightly.

Fibromyalgia is also known as primary fibrositis and may occur concomitantly with other processes.  Fibromyalgia is a non-inflammatory chronic condition causing soft tissue pain and tenderness particularly in axial locations (neck, shoulders and low back).  The onset of fibromyalgia can be precipitated by physical trauma, a motor vehicle accident, a bad fall, post infection or psychological trauma. The symptoms of fibromyalgia are usually accompanied by migrating painful involvement of the upper and lower extremity.  Characteristically, the pain in the neck and low back is an achiness or stiffness.  The pain in the limbs varies from gnawing and tingling to throbbing and burning.

Fibromyalgia is recognized by a constellation of symptoms rather than a specific malfunction.  Roughly 75% of the cases of fibromyalgia are seen in women between the ages of 20 to 60. One of the major symptoms of fibromyalgia is pain which is often found at the tendo-periosteal junction and this is the location of the characteristic tender points (11 of 18 tender points must be present to diagnose fibromyalgia).

Your Chiropractor will perform a thorough history and examination including orthopaedic and neurological testing to determine the extent of your fibromyalgia.  Then they will develop a specific plan of management tailored to your case.
